Summer Rainbow is a quilt of firsts. I was playing with larger compositions to sunprint, and printed the center panel to be displayed on point as a medallion. This panel was painted in a rainbow of bright pastel colors, then overlaid with mixed leaves, gaillardia and plumbago flowers and cutouts of a butterfly and a hummingbird. When done, I had no idea what to do with it. Another first is the use of fabrics fused to both sides of batting before seaming. One of my goals this year was to find a use for pieces of ivory fabrics backed with fusible web. The triangles are composed of various pieces of fabric fused to batting, various size quilt sandwiches were then satin stitched together until I had a piece big enough for them. The borders and corner blocks were done in the same manner, and satin stitched on. The edges are bound with 2 rounds of couched yarn, and the black accent is 2 rows of the same yarn couched on over the seams. The sunprint panel is free motion quilted to accent the leaves, flowers, hummingbird and butterfly. The areas around the print, and the rest of the quilt in quilted using an ivy-like vine pattern all over. This piece is now part of a private collection.
